Subfreezing temperatures inside cold rooms and freezers can seep through the floor, even when it is well insulated. As the soil underneath freezes, capillary action draws water into the frozen areas where the water forms a concentrated ice mass. As the ice mass grows, it can heave the floor and columns, causing damage to the structure and putting valuable inventory at risk.

Other frost heave prevention systems, such as hydronic heating systems, require a complex design that:

  • Can be an environmental hazard as there is a risk of leaking glycol into the soil

No Environmental Concerns

Hydronic heating systems rely on circulating warm fluids, such as a glycol-water mix, to prevent frost heave.  These systems can create environmental hazards due to the risk of leaking glycol into the soil.  nVent Thermal Management’ systems utilize electric heat trace cables and therefore eliminate this risk.

  • Save energy by minimizing the amount of time the system is energized while ensuring that the soil temperature is kept above freezing
  • Program temperature setpoints on a 24/7 schedule to maximize energy savings and abide by energy code requirements, such as California Title 24, where frost heave systems can be turned off during peak demand hours

Additionally, RAYCHEM ACS-30 control platform lets you:

  • Control up to 260 heating cable circuits from a single point of interface
  • Control other nVent Thermal Management heat tracing applications, such as freeze protection, hot water temperature maintenance, roof and gutter deicing, surface snow melting and floor heating from a single user interface
Self-Regulating Technology

nVent RAYCHEM RaySol self-regulating electric heat trace cables automatically adjust their power output to compensate for temperature changes. Heat is generated as electric current passes through the conductive polymer core between the conductors. As the temperature drops, the number of electrical paths through the core increases and more heat is produced. Conversely, as the temperature rises, the core has fewer electrical paths and less heat is produced.

Self regulating

RAYCHEM self-regulating heat trace cables:

  • Can be used for freezer frost heave prevention to prevent heaving in soil under freezers, refrigerated warehouses, and cold rooms
  • Have a cross-linked, conductive polymer core forming a parallel circuit
  • Can be cut  to length, spliced or repaired on site
  • Are protected by a tinned-copper braid encased in a fluoropolymer outer jacket
  • Include state-of-the-art connection kits and accessories

RAYCHEM mineral insulated heat trace cables:

  • Can be used for freezer frost heave prevention applications that require the cable to be embedded in the subfloor
  • Consist of a single or dual conductor heating element, magnesium oxide insulation, a solid metal sheath, and an extruded high density polyethylene (HDPE) jacket
  • Offer two different metal sheath materials—Alloy 825 and HDPE jacketed copper
  • Are supplied as complete factory-fabricated assemblies consisting of a heating section that is joined to a non-heating cold lead and terminated with NPT-threaded connectors.

Advanced Control Systems

nVent Thermal Management offers two advanced control systems for freeze frost heave prevention systems: the RAYCHEM C910 and the RAYCHEM ACS-30. Both electronic controllers are specifically designed for use with both RAYCHEM RaySol self-regulating and RAYCHEM MI heat trace cables.

RAYCHEM C910 :

  • Is ideal for smaller freezers or cold areas
  • Controls a single heating cable circuit

RAYCHEM ACS-30 :

  • Is ideal for large freezers or cold areas, or buildings with multiple heat-tracing applications
  • Can control up to 260 heating cable circuits
